White tissue in urine is a nightmare to many people. We have no worries when we see a transparent or colorless and odorless urine. But, if we notice any crystals, sediments or white chunks in urine, we tend to get worried a lot.
Do you know what causes white specks in urine e to appear? Well, there are many different causes for the presence of white stuff in urine. Some of the most common causes include the presence of alkaline urine, urinary infections, kidney disorders, infections like yeast infections, parasitic infections, etc.
White tissue in urine causes:
White tissue in urine can be caused by minor problems like urinary infections to serious kidney disorders. We need to know all about the causes of white stuff in urine to consult a doctor promptly and get an opinion. Let us explore them in detail.
1. Alkaline urine:
Every substance has a pH. Based on the pH, it is divided into acidic or basic. pH can range from 1 to 14. A pH of 7 is neutral. If the pH of a substance is less than 7, it is said to be acidic. If the pH of the substance is more than 7, it is said to be alkaline.
Our urine is slightly acidic. It has a pH of around 6 on an average. But, some conditions can make our urine become alkaline. If the urine is alkaline, we can see some amorphous phosphate sediments in it. They appear like granular or grainy white flecks in urine.
Alkaline urine can be caused by many different causes. Some of the most common causes of an alkaline urine include urinary tract infections, kidney disorders, and excessive vomiting. It can also be caused by some other serious conditions like respiratory alkalosis, pyloric stenosis, etc.
Sometimes alkaline pH of the urine can be caused by taking some foods like fruits and vegetables which affect the pH levels of the urine. Some drugs like carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, for example, Acetazolamide, Dorzolamide are also implicated in causing white stuff in urine. These drugs are used in the treatment of disorders like glaucoma, epilepsy and they are also used as diuretics.
There is not much harm if you see white tissue in urine caused by foods. But, if white flecks in urine are caused by any other medical disorder, you will need proper history and investigations by an experienced medical professional.
2. Urinary tract infection:
Our normal urine color is transparent or clear to pale yellow in color. If there is any change in the urine color like becoming red, dark yellow, turbid or having white stuff in urine, it mostly signifies some underlying medical condition.
White tissue in urine can be caused by urinary tract infection or UTI also. It is generally caused by gram-negative bacteria like E. coli or Escherichia coli. These bacteria cause inflammation or swelling of the urinary bladder called cystitis. They can also cause swelling of the urethra called urethritis.
UTI produces many other symptoms apart from the presence of white tissue in urine. UTI produces symptoms like increased frequency of urination, dysuria or painful urination, urge to pass urine quickly or urgency, passing small quantities of urine many times and burning sensation.
If you have cystitis you will also suffer from suprapubic pain or pain in the lower part of your abdomen. Your doctor will diagnose your UTI based on the history you give and by performing a CUE or complete urine examination to detect the pus cells or white blood cells in urine.
If required, you may also need to get a urine culture done to identify the bacteria causing UTI and to help the doctor to select the most appropriate antibiotic to which the bacteria are susceptible. You need to get your UTI treated promptly.
Or else the infection can spread upwards to your kidneys and inflame the kidneys, a condition called pyelonephritis. Pyelonephritis is really a dangerous condition requiring hospital admission and intensive treatment.
3. Kidney stones:
Kidney stones are also known as nephrolithiasis. In some people, kidney stones can pass in the urine like white tissue in urine. This happens when you have small kidney stones. It is quite possible that you might be having bigger kidney stones in other parts of your urinary tract.
These kidney stones can be present anywhere from the pelvis of the kidneys to the bladder/ If they are larger in size, they can even obstruct the flow of urine from the kidneys. Kidney stones can also lead to recurrent urinary infections due to the obstruction of the urine flow.
They also produce many other symptoms apart from the presence of white stuff in urine like pain that radiates from loin or flank to the groin. This is called loin to groin pain. Sometimes this ureteric colic caused by kidney stones can be very severe requiring narcotic analgesics.
You need to visit your physician to diagnose and treat the kidney stones promptly. Or else, it can lead to many other complications like urine obstruction, infections, sepsis, etc.
4. Vaginal candidiasis:
Candida albicans is a type of fungus. It can grow excessively in the vagina leading to a condition called vaginal candidiasis. In this condition, there is excessive vaginal discharge which appears like cottage cheese or like a curdy discharge.
This discharge can come out while passing urine leading to the appearance of white tissue in urine of a woman. In addition to the white stuff in urine, vaginal candidiasis causes many other symptoms like burning while urinating, pain in the vagina, dyspareunia or pain while having sex, severe itching or pruritus in the vagina and the red appearance of the vaginal walls on examination.
5. Bacterial vaginosis:
Bacterial vaginosis is a condition that is caused by a protozoan parasite called Gardnerella vaginalis. In this condition, also there is inflammation of the vagina or vaginitis. So, bacterial vaginosis leads to the production of white or gray bubbly or frothy vaginal discharge.
This discharge can come out while passing urine, giving the appearance of white tissue in urine. In addition to the above symptoms, bacterial vaginosis also causes other symptoms like foul smelling or malodorous discharge, dysuria or painful urination, etc.
6. Parasitic infections:
Sometimes if you have any parasitic infections in your body, these worms can pass out like white chunks in urine. Some examples of such parasites that pass out in urine are Schistosoma and filaria. Also, some protozoan parasites like Trichomonas can produce threads of mucus, which pass out like white flecks in urine. So, your physician will need to send your urine for complete urine examination to find out what is exactly wrong with your urine, and what kind of parasites are in it. This will help in deciding the appropriate antimicrobial treatment to get rid of the parasite.
7. Retrograde ejaculation:
This is one of the reasons for getting a white tissue in urine in men. In retrograde ejaculation, the semen of the men is passed into the urinary bladder rather than into the penis when the man ejaculates.
This problem can be caused by weakness of the urinary sphincters which fail to function normally or due to the surgeries conducted on the prostate gland previously. These problems causing white stuff in urine can be corrected by taking the requisite measures.
8. Sexually transmitted infection:
Sometimes you may contract a sexually transmitted infection from your sexual partner. This may lead to the swelling or the inflammation of the urethra. The most common microbes transmitted sexually and causing urethritis are chlamydia and gonorrhoea.
If you have developed a sexually transmitted infection, you may notice white flecks in urine, discharge of pus, dysuria or burning micturition. These infections are diagnosed by taking a swab from the affected area and then sending them for culture. The treatment protocol is based on the results of the culture.
9. White tissue in urine in pregnancy:
There are many causes of white tissue in urine in pregnancy. Even pregnant women can develop infections of the urethra or vagina, leading to white flecks in urine. Apart from that, there is also an increased amount of vaginal discharge during pregnancy.
This increased vaginal discharge is called leucorrhea. It is white in color. So, this gives the appearance of white particles in urine. Also, during last trimester when the labor is approaching, the water can break out or the amniotic sac can get ruptured.
During this time, the mucus plug that is covering the vagina opening like a protection to the baby will get dislodged due to the relaxation of the cervix in the preparation of labor. This mucus plug can appear like white stuff in urine if you urinate at that time. It is completely normally and no need to worry about that.
You have seen all the possible causes of white stuff in urine. For most cases, you will need to get your urine tested for CUE or complete urine examination. This will help in the proper diagnosis of the condition and then initiation of appropriate treatment. So, visit your doctor if you see any white tissue in urine.
