The main characteristics of the essay

To know how to write an essay correctly, you first need to get acquainted with its distinguishing features. So, let’s begin:

  • the essay should be short;
  • this paper is written on a specific topic;
  • the essay does not have a strict composition, so it can be written in a free manner;
  • this paper should express the personal opinion or impressions of the student on a particular issue.

As can be seen from the information presented just above, an essay is a paper of a small volume in which a student speaks out, trying to highlight a specific topic or issue.

Tips for writing an essay

1. Use time to complete the task wisely

First, you need to choose any of the proposed topics, be sure to set aside five minutes to analyze the task. It is necessary to carefully read the proposed topics of the essays, think about what problems are hidden in each of the themes, and mentally select the possible content. Choose the topic that you can present more advantageously from a content and lexical point of view.

Remember that your draft is not checked by a teacher, and if you do not have time to rewrite something, then no one will read it. Take no more than 30 minutes to draft. In a clean copy, write down the essay in full, and count on 1 hour. After completing this work, check what is written in terms of content: are all the required items disclosed, is the paper logically structured, is the topic disclosed, and are there any errors in the format? Remember that you will need at least 20 minutes to check.

2. Remember about stylistic features of the essay

All essays should be written in a neutral style. This means that while essay writing, you should not use:

  • rhetorical questions;
  • various colloquial expressions or constructions like Let’s. Let me and Let us refers to the neutral style;
  • so-called reduced vocabulary such as folks (people);
  • contracted (short) forms of verbs: I’m, he’s, aren’t, don’t, can’t, didn’t, I’d like; the exception is needn’t.
  • If adjectives are needed while writing an essay, it is better to use those that carry more meaning and are less emotional: motivating, educational, convenient, and beneficial.
  • Don’t start a sentence with but or and.

3. Stick to the structure

Introduction

The introduction should correspond to the proposed topic of the essay. In the introduction, write:

  • an introductory thesis of a general nature on the chosen topic with the designation of a communicative situation;
  • the purpose of the essay being carried out.

A student is writing an essay on a specified topic, they have found statistics on the topic, and their goal is to analyze them, expressing their point of view.

Main part

Usually, the main part consists of three paragraphs.

‍Second paragraph

Begin the second paragraph with a description of the main idea of the paragraph, then, summarizing all the points you have into two or three facts, describe them.

Third paragraph

Start writing the third paragraph with a generalized sentence as well. Then give two significant comparisons of the numbers you have. Write numbers as numbers, not letters.

Fourth paragraph

The first sentence is, as always, the main idea of the paragraph. Next, describe a possible problem related to the research topic and suggest a way to solve this problem.

Conclusion

Enter a conclusion expressing your opinion on the topic, which will be indicated in the assignment. Keep in mind that the volume of the conclusion approximately corresponds to the volume of the introduction.

4. Editing Tips

You can edit your paper in several directions at once:

  • Check how logically one part of the essay is related to another. Are they equal, or does one of them override the other? If this still happens, then try to make the “conflicting” parts equal.
  • Try to avoid in your paper excessive bombast and big words inserted in vain. The more sincerely you write, the stronger the reader’s response to your words will be.
  • In this case, it should be one without any jumps in different directions. In this case, it is best to use journalistic writing while trying to write easily and accessibly.
  • If you see that the essay turned out to be too large, then without any regret, cut the largest parts, leaving only the most necessary ones in the text.
  • Read the paper several times, and try to correct all the spelling, grammatical and stylistic errors that it contains.
